Television and Film
Although the 1950s were really a cultural turning point in America they tend to get overlooked. For some reason the 1950s have slipped past our consciousness. They exist in a limbo between the focused efforts of Americans to win World War II and the disappointments and cynicism of the 1960s (the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Vietnam, the Civil Rights Movement, and the deaths of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy).the 1950s were an era of economic growth and a new era of race relations for our country.
With the 1950s came a television in almost every American home. This was a bad time for movie producers, theaters, and drive in movies. Some popular movies of the 50s were All About Eve, An American in Paris, Singin' in the Rain, The African Queen, From Here to Eternity, The Searchers, Path of Glory, and 12 Angry Men.
Some of the most popular TV shows in the 1950s were The Today Show, I love Lucy!, What's My Line?, Leave it to Beaver, Looney Toons, Tom and Jerry, Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone, and Bonanza. Some of these shows are still running today and we enjoy reruns of the others. Just our fondness of the TV shows and movies from the 50s is an indicator of how the 1950s shaped America.
